Engro Foundation inaugurates Ittehad Model Village for flood victims
Multan, March 13, 2012: Engro Foundation inaugurated the Ittehad Model Village today in UC Ehsanpur of district Muzaffargarh for the flood-hit people of southern Punjab. The model village sprawls over 20 acres of land and consists of 166 houses with a total population of over 1000.
Ittehad Model Village was conceptualized, planned and developed by Engro Foundation as an eco-friendly model village with the aim to rehabilitate flood affected community of Muzaffargarh. Engro undertook a holistic planning approach while drawing up this village ensuring that community participation was central to the establishment of the village. To this end Engro Foundation, in collaboration with its project partners involved these community members in the planning and design process, subsequently mobilizing them to participate in the construction of the village.
The Ittehad Model Village has been designed with a focus on six key areas which are crucial to establishing a thriving community. These include community participation, infrastructure, energy conservation, sustainable livelihood opportunities, education and health. Some of the salient features of the village include solar powered electric devices to generate electricity; underground sewerage and sanitation system; play pumps; a dairy hub including a veterinary dispensary and milk collection centre; livelihoods programs for skills training in welding, construction, mat-making, bee-keeping, etc. along with a unique grey water harvesting system for sewerage treatment.
Addressing the audience, Qazi Azmat Isa, CEO, Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund, said: “The Ittehad Model Village is personifies Pakistan at its best, with all stakeholders leveraging their expertise to maximum effect. During the design phase, a unique feature that was focused upon was to ensure that the social fabric of the community before the ravages of rains and floods remained intact and a deliberate effort was mounted to that end. I strongly believe that the Ittehad Model Village symbolize the time-tested virtues of self help resilience and provides a unique example of Corporate, Social and Public Sectors Synergies in service of a common cause and nation building.”
Another unique feature of the Ittehad Model Village is the empowerment of females. Through various education and skills training programs the females have been given unique socio-economic opportunities to contribute to the financial well-being of their families. In addition, the ownership of houses has also been allotted to female members of the households as another step towards empowering women in the village community.
Speaking at the ceremony, Asad Umar, CEO, Engro Corp and Chairman Engro Foundation said: “The Ittehad Model Village is the outcome of strong linkages with both our partners and the community members. It is a pleasure to see that our mutual efforts have culminated in creating a thriving village with unique features that has helped rebuild lives.”
The Ittehad Model Village is the flagship program of Engro Foundation – the single CSR front for all Engro affiliates – and to date remains the largest social investment project of the foundation.
