Engro Reading Program Launched To Make A Change

The Engro Reading Program (ERP) was initiated in December 2015 through a PKR 22 million grant from USAID for the purpose of building the capacities of 1,300+ primary school children in our Daharki and Qadirpur adopted schools in the 3 languages of Urdu, Sindhi, and English. Since commencement, the ERP has implemented a baseline assessment to understand the gaps prevalent in each students learning, and is in the process of designing interventions that ultimately raise students’ capacity by 70% from the baseline outcome.

Other interventions since include a 6-day summer reading camp in all 13 adopted schools, where 900 participants ran through educational games such as word puzzles, phonic exercises, and story development exercises. The camp was the first ever to be implemented across adopted schools, and the feedback received from both teachers and parents was extremely positive. Intra-school competitions were also held in all 13 Engro-adopted schools where children from grades 1-5 enthusiastically participated in reading and spelling bee competitions in each school in the 3 languages of English, Sindhi and Urdu. The top 3 participants in each language were awarded prizes in a ceremony.

Earlier, 13 computer labs equipped with state-of-the-art desktop computers, as well as library corners with over 4,000 books have been established in these schools, with both capacity building and refresher trainings for 66 teachers currently employed at the schools, to ensure that teachers are trained to carry out appropriate interventions for enhancing the reading capacities of students. The ERP will conclude in June, 2017.
