Ittehad Model Village

The surging waters of the 2010 floods wiped out communities and all traces of life in the Muzaffargarh district, leaving thousands of villagers homeless and utterly desolate as they struggled to stay afloat and regain their footing in life.

Concentrating our efforts on rehabilitation, recovery and restoration of livelihoods for the affected people, the plight of the flood victims soon paved the way for the Ittehad Model Village Project – the single largest social investment in the history of Engro Foundation. The Ittehad Model Village is a result of combined efforts of Engro Foundation and our partners which include Pakistan Poverty Alleviation Fund PPAF), Government of Punjab (GoP), Ansar Management Company (AMC), Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Farmers Development Organization (FDO), Technology Upgradation & Skill Development Company (TUSDEC) and Roshni.

In our efforts to rebuild Ehsanpur and mobilize the affected people to take ownership of their lives, community involvement and self-governance became an integral part of our strategy and remained central to all areas of the Ittehad Model Village Project since its very inception.

Consequently, these concerted efforts have culminated in the construction of a safe haven for the flood affectees in the form of Ittehad Model Village replete with the following features:

  • 166 houses with two rooms, a veranda, washroom and hand-pump
  • Solar electrification of residential (3 solar panels, 100W each) as well as common facilities; 6 parks and Livestock Sheds along with Play-Pumps that help provide easy access to water
  • Underground sewerage connected to a Grey-water Harvesting unit for purification and reuse of water; a mosque, community centre and Dairy Hub for milk collection purposes
  • 2 skills training programs in construction and welding as well as three women-focused livelihood trainings in mat-making, honey-beekeeping & kitchen-gardening
  • Adult Literacy, non-formal education and play groups to ensure 100% enrolment of the village residents in literacy programs

Today, as a result of our endeavors, thousands of people now have the fortitude to smile again, and a place that they can call home.
