The skilled scholars of Ghaggar Phatak

Engro Polymer & Chemicals Ltd. (EPCL) continued with the EPCL Hunar Scholarship Program in 2015 by inducting a fourth cycle of 10 motivated scholars. The objective of this program is to train youth and equip them with marketable trades such as mechanical, electrical, refrigeration and plumbing.

Ghaggar Phatak is a collection of villages lying along the National Highway across the Bin Qasim Industrial Zone. Despite being close to one of the largest industrial areas, lack of provision of education and skills training in the area has meant that inhabitants of Ghaggar Phatak have not been able to participate in the formal economy that is still rapidly expanding in the industrial zone.

As part of its commitment to contribute to the development of Ghaggar Phatak, EPCL continued with the EPCL Hunar Scholarship Program in 2015 by inducting a fourth cycle of scholars. In total, the program has inducted 38 scholars since its initiation at the end of 2012. The objective of this program is to train youth, who have completed their matriculation or intermediate studies, and equip them with marketable trades such as mechanical, electrical, refrigeration and plumbing.

This program is going a long way in improving livelihoods in Ghaggar Phatak. However, a more holistic approach has to be adopted jointly by all the industrial concerns located in Bin Qasim. Developing skills of the local population not only assists in socio-economic development, it also assists industry by enhancing local recruitment, which is a proven technique to improve employee retention.
